Stajan Out After Odd Injury

Mike Ulmer of mapleleafs.com was at practice Monday and confirmed that Matt Stajan will be out for up to two weeks after suffering an eye injury during off-ice warmups. Ulmer says the centre’s odd injury is one of several to befall pro athletes.

To most 41-year-old backup goaltenders, getting consecutive starts is a godsend.

To Curtis Joseph, it’s a matter of survival.

With his reputation taking a beating this season and rookie Justin Pogge on the farm, Joseph was given a chance at redemption by coach Ron Wilson. Joseph kicked off his back-to-back starts with a 4-3 overtime win over the Atlanta Thrashers on Tuesday night.

Joseph will be back in goal on Thursday when the Leafs are home against the Buffalo Sabres as Wilson gives starter Vesa Toskala a rest during a four-game homestand.

“That’s New Year’s Day, so I’ll have to be in bed early,” Joseph said in jest. “It’s a good feeling (to know he won’t be sitting for weeks without playing again).”

Wilson predicted Joseph would be even better…

Curtis Joseph is happy the long wait for his milestone win is over. Joseph made 29 saves to earn his first win of the season and the 450th victory of his NHL career and the Toronto Maple Leafs rallied to beat the Atlanta Thrashers 4-3 in overtime on Tuesday night. Pavel Kubina scored the winner on a power play 33 seconds into overtime to help the Leafs end a three-game losing streak.
