Another day in Toronto – Sat Jan 26

January 26th, 2008

Well another day in Toronto. More and more questions and thought come up regarding what will happen to this team.

First off, in the last 2 games the Leafs lost 3 players - Alexei Ponikarovsky, Alex Steen and Darryl Boyce have been added to the teams injury list. Toronto appears to be a team full of injuries. The odd thing about that is the Leafs had the same problem last year. While this may be a strange coincidence, it also may not. The Leafs management need to look into this in the off season, it is not normal for a team to be near the top of man hours lost per year for a few years in a row.

More and more trade rumors develop each day. when Cliff Fletcher came to Toronto last week, he met with players and told them if they want the team to stay together, they need to start pulling in wins. While they won against Washington in Toronto, they lost the next night. I don't know of anyone who still believe that the Leafs have a chance for the playoffs this year.

Brian Burke has publicly announced he has no interest in coming to Toronto, so that's another name to cross of the list.

It has been reported that one of Cliff's first moves as the interim GM will be to figure out what needs to be done with Sundin and the future of the franchise. Currently the worst thing that comes to mind is Sundin retiring a Leaf at the end of the season, that would create a huge hole in the team.

It is expected soon that Fletcher will have a good idea of how close or far the Leafs are from the playoff race. It almost seems like each time they play it puts them further and further back. Lets hope if they don't make it this year, Fletcher is able to put in some plans to turn it around for next year.
