The underdogs take on and defeat number 1 team

February 9th, 2008

Not many people saw this coming. The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Red Wings today in a 3-2 overtime win.

The main highlight of the game seemed to be a goaltender dual between Vesa Toskala and the veteran Dominik Hasek. The odd thing with this is almost every goal scored in this game was a fluke, very odd bounces and pucks off bodies and skates.

The veterans of the Leafs gave the youth a rest and showed them that they are still winning and capable of putting up points. Darcy Tucker started off the scoring with an odd bounce off of one of Detroits defenders skates. Later on Sundin slid the puck between Hasek's pads. In the end it was a tip in front of the net by Antropov which finished the game in overtime.

The Maple Leafs must be glad to see Bryan McCabe back in the lineup. Whlie he may not be 100% back in the swing of things, he has been a welcomed return and has been helping the Leafs defense shut down the Habs and Red Wings.

Carlo Colaiacovo seems like he is starting to get back in the swing of things as well. He gave many Leaf fans a scare on Thursday when he went down after missing a hit on Saku Koivu. Nik Antropov and Alex Steen also returned on Saturday.

While players are starting to return, that means some call ups need to return to their team as well. Andy Wozniewski, Ben Ondrus and Kris Newbury have all been reassigned back to the Toronto Marlies. However - Anton Stralman, Robbie Earl and Jiri Tlusty are still with the big club.

The Leafs skills competition is tomorrow (Sunday), then they will have a few days of rest before facing the Sabres on Wednesday.
